Western Hognose Snake

Those snakes are also known as the “Shovel Nose” Snake for their noses. Theses quirky snakes are normally docile, but can be hissy. The Eastern Hognose Snake has a habit of playing dead around predators by rolling onto their backs and opening their mouths. Hognose snakes do secrete a venom in their saliva that is lethal to small prey animals but is harmless to humans.

Hognoses grow less than 2 feet long on average.

Since hognoses do not grow very large, a 20-gallon tank is sufficient for this kind of snake. Make sure your enclosure has PLENTY of pine shavings or topsoil because Hognoses like to burrow.
